See you soon, friends
Dear readers,
Back in the summer of 2009, I began to work on a challenging map. Trying to find out if it was possible to drive around the world. Now that the map is done, I will attempt the drive, just to make sure I got it right. My last day as an art director at the Associated Press will be November 2, and from there, I expect this blog to be half asleep. While I will be traveling, if I find some interesting design content, I will definitely post it here, but in the meantime, if you are interested to follow my travel, you should go on my other blog at http://transworldexpedition.com
With 600 RSS subscribers, I think this blog has been a success, and I definitely intend to get back to it in a year, when I will be back, so please keep it bookmarked, and stay connected to the feed.
And speaking of getting back, I will be looking for a job at this point, so if you like my work and your dream is to give me a big paycheck every two weeks, please contact me. I should be back in the U.S. in the winter of 2010, and would consider exotic places as well.
One last thing. I know there are people from many countries following my blog, and I would like to visit you, wherever you are. So please check the map, and let me know if I will be close to you. Then I can come, maybe see your workplace, and we can have a drink.
Waiting to hear from you!
Nick

Uh, people do this all the time, myself included for the Africa portion.
1year is not hardly enough time either to appreciate this trip or - you’re going need 18 months to 2 years minimum.
Not sure why you are confused about Nigeria - both wonderful countries, and minus the suicidally-fast Nigerian drivers, most of the roads after the Mamfe border crossing are decent with the exception of the road between Benin City and Lagos.
Angola is an amazing country - the roads are tough, but there is zero police hassle (why you think Cameroon will be a breeze is beyond me in this regard), the people are great, and the speed of development is incredible.
You need a 4×4 or an decent dual-sport motorcycle, but otherwise most places are great.
I would recommend you check out http://www.horizonsunlimited.com as a starter and do some homework on vehicle equipping, routes, and visa issues (i.e. there is no way you’re getting an Angola visa without connections).

You should def pay a visit to the city of Medellin, Colombia. What a transformation - Medellin is now one of the leading metropolitan areas of the continent.
Enjoy

I hope you’ll add a drive across Australia to your trip, it’s too good not to include Perth, Alice Springs, Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane…

Good luck Nicolas! Your trip is an inspiration to me. To quit your job and just take on an adventure like this is something I dream about doing some day. Being 27 and just starting a new career I can see that it would be easy for someone to get complacent and not go after their dreams. Luckily I have a job that has brought me to Africa (Djibouti) and pays well so that I will be able to see the world one day. Maybe when you’re in Africa I can take some vacation time and meet up with you. There are a lot of places I’d like to see on this continent and even a few others!

What Guru’s are Saying : Art Editor Maps Drive Around World, Then Drives It October 24th, 2009 at 13:18
[...] Art Editor Maps Drive Around World, Then Drives It This is a lovely thing, something that crosses both the art and physical worlds: Former AP art editor Nicolas Rapp created a map of how you might (mostly) drive around the world, and now he is leaving to take a year to try to do it. Note the dark stretches of the map, gaps where Mssr Rapp isn’t entirely sure how he’ll get from A to B.More here. [...]
