  • See you soon, friends

    Dear readers,
Back in the summer of 2009, I began to work on a challenging map. Trying to find out if it was possible to drive around the world. Now that the map is done, I will attempt the drive, just to make sure I got it right.

    world

A graphic showing my route will be published with a AP story next week

My last day as an art director at the Associated Press will be November 2, and from there, I expect this blog to be half asleep. While I will be traveling, if I find some interesting design content, I will definitely post it here, but in the meantime, if you are interested to follow my travel, you should go on my other blog at http://transworldexpedition.com

With 600 RSS subscribers, I think this blog has been a success, and I definitely intend to get back to it in a year, when I will be back, so please keep it bookmarked, and stay connected to the feed.

And speaking of getting back, I will be looking for a job at this point, so if you like my work and your dream is to give me a big paycheck every two weeks, please contact me. I should be back in the U.S. in the winter of 2010, and would consider exotic places as well.

One last thing. I know there are people from many countries following my blog, and I would like to visit you, wherever you are. So please check the map, and let me know if I will be close to you. Then I can come, maybe see your workplace, and we can have a drink.

    Waiting to hear from you!

    Nick

  • Good luck! Have a fantastic adventure.

  • Uh, people do this all the time, myself included for the Africa portion.

1year is not hardly enough time either to appreciate this trip or - you’re going need 18 months to 2 years minimum.

Not sure why you are confused about Nigeria - both wonderful countries, and minus the suicidally-fast Nigerian drivers, most of the roads after the Mamfe border crossing are decent with the exception of the road between Benin City and Lagos.

Angola is an amazing country - the roads are tough, but there is zero police hassle (why you think Cameroon will be a breeze is beyond me in this regard), the people are great, and the speed of development is incredible.

You need a 4×4 or an decent dual-sport motorcycle, but otherwise most places are great.

I would recommend you check out http://www.horizonsunlimited.com as a starter and do some homework on vehicle equipping, routes, and visa issues (i.e. there is no way you’re getting an Angola visa without connections).

  • Thanks for the advises Matt. I should have explain and say this graphic will be publish with a AP story on Monday, which detail why these countries are highlighted. If you go on my other blog, at http://transworldexpedition.com, I speak a lot about what you just mention, and there’s a link to the HUBB. And yes, you are right, one year seems a bit short, I’ll see…

  • Thanks Dustin, I’ll send you submissions when I’m back!

  • You should def pay a visit to the city of Medellin, Colombia. What a transformation - Medellin is now one of the leading metropolitan areas of the continent.

    Enjoy

  • I will. Can’t wait to see that.

  • Wow! Good luck with that, it looks like it’ll be pretty incredible.

  • I hope you’ll add a drive across Australia to your trip, it’s too good not to include Perth, Alice Springs, Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane…

  • I wanted to, but it seems that it will be way more expensive to go down there and ship to the U.S. after.

  • Good luck Nicolas! Your trip is an inspiration to me. To quit your job and just take on an adventure like this is something I dream about doing some day. Being 27 and just starting a new career I can see that it would be easy for someone to get complacent and not go after their dreams. Luckily I have a job that has brought me to Africa (Djibouti) and pays well so that I will be able to see the world one day. Maybe when you’re in Africa I can take some vacation time and meet up with you. There are a lot of places I’d like to see on this continent and even a few others!

  • Thanks Dave!

  • Salut nico, t’es déja sur les routes ? en tous cas si tu passes à paris on pourras prendre un verre avant que tu repartes vers de nouvelles aventures…trip bien en tous cas !

  • what a wonderful trip you have planned. i wish you good fortune and enjoy your life

  • I am living through you young man. I wish you the best on your journey.
